Crumbling mountain kills 3 trying to save comrades

HUNTINGTON, Utah — After 10 days of setbacks, nerve-jangling “bumps” and a second mine collapse that killed three workers trying to rescue six trapped comrades, authorities on Friday conceded defeat to a mountain that appeared to be slowly crumbling.

Mine “bumps” explode like hand grenades, shooting high-speed coal and rock at anyone in the way as support pillars buckle.
